The States With the Most Breweries (Per Capita and Overall)
We are a nation of craft beer lovers and they have become a staple of American culture, with thousands of breweries popping up across the country. Even though the industry faced challenges in 2022—rising costs, competition, and a slowdown in new openings—craft breweries still reached a record-breaking 9,552 locations nationwide. Some states, however, stand out when it comes to their brewing presence, whether by sheer numbers or per capita dominance.
So, which states lead the way? Let’s take a closer look!
Most Breweries Per Capita
When it comes to breweries per capita, smaller states with a strong craft beer culture dominate. Vermont takes the crown, boasting over 15.5 breweries per 100,000 adults over 21. Maine follows closely behind, while states like Montana, Alaska, and Wyoming round out the top five.
